Fly riddle

Oh, hello internet.

Not much to say: it's been hot, it's been muggy, it's been fly-riddled.

Went for a ride on Saturday, and even in Doily Head mode both Peanut and Mona were miserable with the flies.  We ended up cutting the ride very short.  I really want to ride with one of these, but Peanut's eyes are too wide-set for Horse and his head is too small for Warmblood.  I got a Warmblood one, which fits his eyes swimmingly, but I will need to take it in considerably underneath the jaw as well as a smidgen in front of the ears.  I haven't been motivated/confident enough to take scissors to it yet, but I guess I need to.

So, here's the conundrum: how to keep the flies away?  I use sprays that contain oils, not chemicals, and they do a mediocre job for about 20 minutes.  Certain flies don't give a fig about it at all.  I could use the kind with pyrethrin, but it's a neurotoxin that is absorbed by the skin.  Fly sprays often contain warnings to never get it on your skin, if you do flush afterwards for 20 minutes, and be careful how to dispose of extra or the bottle as it will harm waterways.  I don't want to put that on my horse!

When it is buggy out, we try to ride in the shade as open fields are swarming with bugs, but they will even infiltrate the woods on bad days.

What to do... what to do... what to do......

I swear the flies are awful this year, but the ticks seem to be better. I don't know which I prefer. :(
